Internet issue causes more than 1.3 billion loss in business
Pakistan's frequent internet shutdowns are hindering economic progress, especially for online business. Recent report from the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) said that these internet issues have resulted a direct loss of 0.57% of the country’s GDP, or roughly Rs 1.3 billion. When indirect effects are factored in, the total economic impact for 2023 rises to estimated Rs 1.7 billion.
One major shutdown in August 2023 has had a particularly severe impact on e-commerce, causing a 30% decrease in revenue for online businesses. Experts said that that, to improve the digital economy, Pakistan needs to improve internet access and invest more in digital infrastructure to boost economy.
